Design Basics
100 hours - 5.00 semester credit hours
An exploration of, and training in, the principles and processes of design, brainstorming and theme development. Comping skills (including marker/pencils/ink), 1, 2, and 3-point perspective, line art techniques, color theory and template use.

You will be provided with a rubric, assessment critique sheet and additional printed handouts
Lecture approximately 50% of class time. Demonstration of procedures, techniques, discussions and class lab period are other 50%.

At the completion of this course students will be able to:
1. To become fluent in the terminology and theory of design.
2. To be fully competent in the traditional method of comping.
3. To understand the creative processes and how to nurture it.
4. To be familiar with advertising objectives relating to design.
5. to be fluent in communicating ideas and concepts through graphic design.
Course Syllabus
Attendance:
This course involves speaking and listening experiences crucial to obtaining the objectives of the course. As a common and professional courtesy, please advise me when you will miss a class meeting when you know in advance. Unforeseen situations happen but attendance is your responsibility. Platt’s attendance policy is to drop students after three consecutive missed classes automatically. I will strictly adhere to this policy and if your miss your fourth class during the semester, you will unfortunately dropped from this course.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the act of presenting work, either written, created or spoken that is not your own. This includes, but is not limited to , cheating on exams, not properly citing others’ work, using someone else’s writing or creating someone’s else artistic design work without approval. Platt College and instructors will not tolerate plagiarism of any sort and the penalty will be automatic failure of this course and potential dismissal from Platt.
Makeup:
There will be NO makeup exam or speeches. Ask in advance is you have a timing confliction. Emergencies will be handled on a case-by-case basis solely at the approval of the instructor.
Class Expectations:
All students will be treated fairly and with respect. Verbal or physical abuse to other students, instructor, equipment, building or classroom will not be tolerated. If these expectations are violated, the violator will be appropriately disciplined, which may include: a verbal warning, written warning, class suspension, expulsion from the class, and expulsion from the college.
Class Protocol:
Make sure all cellular devices are turned off during class time. Be aware of perfume and clothing attire. Due to insurance policies, children are not allowed in the classroom at any time. Try not to leave the class during a speech and please do not enter the class while a speech in in session. As a courtesy to the speaker, please wait outside the classroom until they are finished speaking. Finally, never at any time are weapons, drugs, reptiles, or animals allowed in the classroom. If I suspect you are under the influence of alcohol or an illegal drug, you will be asked to leave class.
Class Participation:
Participation in this class in required in a variety of ways. Attendance to each class session is extremely important and will count significantly towards the points earned in this category. Having perfect attendance does not translate to the 50 points for class participation grade. Every student is expected to participate in a variety of ways including: class discussions, feedback after student speech, listening, and staying engaged during each class period, speaking at scheduled times, and of course physical pretense.

one final drawing to be used for final clean drawing in ink of Newspaper Ad.
Newspaper Ad is in black & white with grayscale value at a minimum, 1/2 page Ad size
Project #5
Liqueur Magazine Ad Design, Liqueur Label & Flyer Campaign (Due day 24)
You will need to create a full campaign of these three items. All must incorporate the
Principles of Design and Elements of Design & Art. A 1 page paper of each principle
and element that was used in the finished completed campaign my be explained.
Sketchbook of 10 rough drawing concept ideas each 3.5”x5”, two semi-comp drawings,
one final drawing to be used for final clean drawing in ink of the campaign design.
Sketchbook
This is a major part of your grade. Your creative ideas start here and visually show the
concept ideas beside every project. This class is strongly based on concept ideas and
creativity. All artist no matter what field the artist are in the first steps are the ideas.
Every project requires sketches, you will need to hand in your sketchbook when the
projects are due.
Late projects
I will accept no late assignments. This is an accelerated class of only 5 week, 25 days.
If you will be missing class on the day the project is due, please hand it in early.
Emergencies happen, a late project to be accepted only by approval & determine by me.
Exams
Exams both midterm will have three categories of multiple choice, matching and
answering questions. Final exam is assessed as multiple design comp assessment.
